AFRO HAIR HYDRATION HEROES
It’s fairly common knowledge that I have two left hands when it comes to doing my own hair. It’s very clear that I didn’t stand in the right queue when the talent was being handed out. This is why I have Subrina Kidd on speed dial, but from time to time I’m forced to tidy up my mane myself at home and I promise you that the process is a whole lot easier when I have decent products to work with. My hair is coloured and natural, which means it’s fragile so hydration and moisture are the two things I’m always after.
Over the last two months (like the hair blogger I am not) I’ve been trying out some new hair products in my simple wash and go routine and seeing which ones keep my hair in good condition, moisturised and soft. These are the keepers:
Pattern Beauty
First of all, Tracee knocked it out of the park with the bold and beautiful packaging. I love Black women having nice things, so even if this was just going to be bathroom decoration it would have scored top marks. Thankfully, its got a bit more in the tank and Pattern did leave my hair super luscious - top marks especially go to the Intensive Conditioner for Tight Curls. My hair tends to go frizzy when it’s dry and parched, and this conditioner seriously just got it together, especially when I took the time to use it as a deep conditioning treatment for 10 - 15 mins. Talk about bringing out the curl pattern when you comb through. Every strand is defined and popping.
If I’m cane-rowing my hair to go under a wig, the Leave in Conditioner with a few drops of the Jojoba Blend Oils, really keeps my hair feeling healthy and moisturisers, even when I take down the cane rows which can sometimes be up to a week later!
One thing I like about this whole range, is that it feels luxurious - the textures, the scents - it’s all an upgrade for your hair life. However, Pattern you need to hurry up and be stocked in the UK.
Lotta Body
Badass business woman Jamelia Donaldson (founder of Treasure Tress ) who I completely adore gifted me this set and it’s been my standard post- workout wash and go. I’ve seen Lotta Body a lot in the States and I’ve always wanted to try it, so thank you JD.
The shampoo efficiently removes sweat and dirt from my scalp without making it feel rough and dry, plus it doesn’t dull my hair colour. The Leave in Conditioner enriched with milk proteins and honey is great for every day use and really does keep hair well moisturised, its lightweight and easy to apply and use texture, absorbs well into my hair and doesn’t make me have to work hard just to see its benefits.
These two products have brought me uncomplicated joy in using it because they understands the assignment and just keep it moving.
Dizziak
I love home grown talent and Dizziak is based right here on UK soil (yay).
For me, it’s the conditioner - it’s top notch with key deep condition ingredients such as quinoa proteins, Inca Inci Oil and Babassu Oil - all which tackle dry strands quickly and locks moisture into them. When you squirt the product out on to your palm - you can see that it is a rich and solid. They did not scrimp in the formula. My hair felt adequately moisturised for days without any of the usually dry frizz its prone to. Being totally transparent, I wasn’t a big fan of the fragrance, but the first time I used it, I distinctly remember thinking, ‘never mind the scent babe, your hair is banging’ and I’ve been using it at least once a week for over a month.
They’ve just released a body conditioner that is also a heavyweight. I think it’s safe to say that Loretta (founder of Dizziak) knows a thing or two about battling dryness. It’s rich, deeply moisturising and non-greasy. We’re big fans in my house. Both thumbs up!
